Kids and Their Families Invited to EASL Kids Fishing Rodeo August 6

Hello All, This is a reminder to all of our EASL members that our 56th Annual Kid’s Fishing Rodeo is on August 6, 2016. Please grab your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends and bring them to the fishing rodeo.

EASLKids fishing picDon’t forget that it’s for kids ages 2-14 and they each need a fishing pole or rod and reel. There will be some crickets donated by Fluker Cricket Farms, but we encourage you to bring any live bait you’d like-just no artificial lures or baits.

The sign-up for the rodeo starts at 6:30AM at Twin Lakes Park in Dutchtown, La. The fishing starts at 7:00AM and ends at 9:00AM. There will be a weigh-in after the fishing is done. Hot dogs and jambalaya prepared and donated by the Motiva Rec Club, will be available while we tally the results.  Rodney Dupuy from CAJUNLIVINNCOOKIN, will be on hand to take pictures. You can do this while waiting for the tally or bring your fish to take a picture.

abby with trophyAfter the scores are turned in, we will give trophies for the biggest fish overall to a girl and a boy. There will also be trophies in four separate age groups for most fish (boy and girl) and biggest fish. Also, there will be a drawing in three age groups for bicycles.

We want to make sure that as many Sportsman League members as possible are out there because we all need to work together to help this event continue to be successful.

EASL Terry Melancon Memorial Saltwater Challenge Set for July 15-16, 2016

EASL’s Terry Melancon Memorial Salt Water Challenge will take place Friday July 15 for registration and social, and conclude Saturday July 16th with weigh in, awards and fish fry.  All activities including registration, eating, socializing, weigh-in, awards, etc. will take place at the camps behind the Cajun Holiday Motel.  This is located on the left just past the Grand Isle Bridge.

In 2015 we started having door prizes and ditty bags for all of the participants.  If you can secure items please bring them to the rodeo or to one of the EASL meetings leading up to the event.  Touch base with Torrey if you can get something.

Two important Schedule notes:

  • All anglers must be registered by 8:00 pm Friday. If you want to fish in the rodeo and cannot get to Grand Isle Friday night give your registration fees to someone that can pay for you Friday evening.
  • All anglers must be at the weigh in by 3:00 Saturday

We will rent 3 camps.  The camps will be reserved for the first 30 people who pay $120 each for the entire weekend starting Thursday night.  This is non-refundable, if you pay and cannot attend it will be up to the individual to find someone to take their place.   Currently there are 11 unpaid spots still available.  Of those spots, six have been requested but not paid for. So with all that said, if you want a bed in one of the three camps get your money in soon.

Categories

  • 5 largest speckled trout – combined weight (1st & 2nd place)
  • Largest trout (1st place only)
  • 2 redfish under 27” – combined weight (1st & 2nd place)
  • Biggest red (any length) (1st place only)
  • Biggest flounder (1st place only)
  • “Other”; (1st place only; $20) Definition: any legal fish except redfish, trout, or flounder
  • Cajun Slam; (optional $10/team; winning team takes all) Combined weight of each team’s biggest; Red (under 27”), Trout, & Flounder. Any fish weighed-in for the Slam, can also be entered in the other categories. All three species must be caught to win.  If no team catches all 3 species 2 species will be weighed then 1.

Rules

  • Entry Fee: $15/participant; $10 goes to payouts for winners; $5 goes to meals. Meal money will be kept in a separate bucket.  We are asking that each person eating pay $5 to help pay for the 2 meals.  Drinks will not be served.  Eaters must bring their own drinks.
  • All participants must be signed-up prior to Friday night start time
  • All participants older than 15 must be current EASL member. Participants 15 and younger must be accompanied by a current EASL member. Memberships will be available for purchase at Friday evening sign-up
  • Teams can have from 1, to no more than 5 people
  • Team members should remain within sight of each other while fishing
  • Fishing starts at 12:00 a.m. (midnight) Friday night
  • Participants must be present at the weigh-in site no later than 3 p.m. Saturday – No exceptions
  • Method of catch: Hook & line only; no flounder gigging, netting, etc.
  • Both artificial & live bait are permissible
  • Fishing boundaries: Any water within boating distance from Grand Isle/Fourchon/Leeville

*CANCELLED* Kisatchie Trail Ride Scheduled for June 11 *CANCELLED*

CANCELLED: Due to low participation registration and possible damage or unsuitable conditions to the trail from the recent deluge of rains, EASL is canceling the trail ride this Saturday, June 11. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused those who had already signed up. If enough interest is generated later this fall, we may try to reschedule.  Any questions at all, call 5718101.

*CHANGE* Kisatchie Trail Ride is scheduled for (new date) Saturday, June 11. EASL is planning a trail ride to the Sandstone Trail in the Kisatchie National Forest projected to be on Saturday, June 11.  The date will depend on the trail’s availability, depending on the rains toward the end of May. We will monitor closely through June 4 if the trail is usable.  The ride is for regular 4 wheelers — no side by sides. They are too wide for the trail bridges. This will be a slow paced, family encouraged ride, not a race. There are many nature sights on this 26 mile trek. Riders will need to bring your own provisions: water, food and drinks, so please be self-contained on your bike. Camping is available. EASL’s Pan Fish Rodeo Saturday, April 9, 2016

UPDATE: The EASL held its 1st Annual Pan Fish Rodeo on Saturday, April 9. According to Mike Lambert who chaired the rodeo, 10 people weighed in fish at PJ’s Landing that afternoon. The results are as follows:
1st Place- Mac Daigle with 10.44 lbs
2nd Place- Wanda Daigle with 9.43 lbs
3rd Place- Josh Savoy with 5.58 lbs
Big Fish- Mac Daigle with .85 lbs

RULES

1)       NO REGISTRATION NEEDED PRIOR TO FISHING.  JUST FISH ANY PUBLIC WATER YOU CHOOSE STARTING AT SUNRISE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 9.  REGISTRATION WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE WEIGH IN.

2)       MUST USE HOOK AND LINE, LIVE OR ARTIFICIAL BAIT.

3)       MUST BE AN E.A.S.L. MEMBER.  FISHERMEN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A MEMBER.

4)       EACH PERSON WILL FISH INDIVIDUALLY, NO TEAMS, SO YOU MUST KEEP YOUR FISH SEPARATED FROM OTHERS YOU ARE FISHING WITH.

5)       USE YOUR OWN JUDGMENT AND KEEP ONLY FISH THAT ARE A SIZE YOU CAN EAT.

6)       RETURN TO PJ’s LANDING NO LATER THAN 2:00 P.M. WITH YOUR LIMIT OF PAN FISH FOR WEIGH IN.

7)       PAN FISH WILL INCLUDE BREAM, PERCH, CRAPPIE, AND OTHER LIKE FRESH WATER FISH.  NO BASS OR CATFISH WILL BE WEIGHED, BUT CAN BE DONATED TO THE FISH FRY.

8)       EACH PERSON’S CATCH WILL BE WEIGHED AS A WHOLE AND RECORDED.  THE WEIGHT OF YOUR BIGGEST FISH WILL ALSO BE RECORDED.

9)       CASH PRIZES WILL BE PAID TO THE WINNERS WITH $25.00 FOR 1st PLACE, $15.00 FOR 2nd, $10.00 FOR 3rd, AND $10.00 FOR BIGGEST OVERALL PAN FISH.

10)   ALL FISHERMEN WILL PREPARE A SHARE OF THEIR FISH TO BE COOKED AT E.A.S.L.’s NEXT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING TO BE HELD APRIL 18, 2016 AT THE AMERICAN LEGION POST 81 OFF CORNERVIEW STREET IN GONZALES AT 7PM.

Ashlee Fink Wins First Place in EASL Squirrel Rodeo

EASL’s 2015 Squirrel Rodeo on Saturday, October 3rd had 19 hunters this year.  First Place: Ashlee Fink, with a limit that weighed 8.7 lbs. Second Place: Mike Brown, with 7 that weighed 8.1 lbs, and also tied for biggest squirrel. Third Place was Gary Lass with 8 at 7.1 lbs. Hunters enjoyed a jambalaya cooked by Perry Berteau. On Sunday, EASL members enjoyed a tasty squirrel gravy cooked by Todd Breaux at Merle’s place. Thanks to our cooks, Dwain Gautreaux for chairing this annual event and Merle Gautreaux for hosting.

Louisiana Hunting Heritage Program

THE LOUISIANA HUNTING HERITAGE PROGRAM: CONTINUING THE TRADITION

The Louisiana Hunting Heritage Program (LHHP) is a new program that focuses on reducing the obstacles that prospective hunters in today’s society face.  In the past, people learned to hunt from their family or close friends, and access to land was readily available.  Today, a person who has an interest in hunting may not have the family or social network to help them get started.  As a result, many people with an interest in hunting never give it a try or simply give up when faced with the challenges of being a hunter in today’s world.  The LHHP is not limited to any age or demographic group, but welcomes anyone who wants to learn to hunt and anyone who has a desire to help others learn about hunting.  The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) sponsors the LHHP and works to create a network of hunting mentors that are willing to teach others about hunting and help their apprentices become skilled and independent hunters.
Getting Involved As a Mentor…
You will be matched with an apprentice hunter and asked to guide them along their journey to becoming an independent hunter.  Activities should include participation in a hunter education class, shooting range visits, scouting trips, game care experiences and others tailored to the skill level and interests of the apprentice hunter.  Of course, you will also take them hunting.  Hunting can occur on either public or private land and can include any game animals that you and the apprentice desire to hunt.
You will receive training, support, and liability insurance coverage from LDWF and its partners.  However, it is your experience and involvement that will help your apprentice become a self-sufficient and independent hunter.  This is an excellent opportunity for experienced hunters to share their passion for the outdoors and help secure the future of hunting.
Getting Involved as an Apprentice…
You will be paired with an experienced hunter who will serve as your hunting mentor.  You and your mentor will take part in a variety of activities that will prepare you to become an independent hunter.  You will learn about the various aspects of hunting including safety, woods skills, game care, equipment needs, and finding a place to hunt.  You and your mentor will put these skills to use on actual hunts so you will become familiar and comfortable with the total hunting experience.
Your mentor will be an experienced hunter who has volunteered their time and resources to help you learn to hunt.  You will be paired with a mentor based on your level of experience, location and game you desire to hunt.  Any person 10 years of age or older is welcome to be an apprentice – youth to senior citizens are encouraged to become involved and learn about a new way to experience the outdoors.
Getting Started…
Mentor applicants should complete and return the mentor application/questionnaire.

55th EASL Kids Fishing Rodeo Set for August 1, 2015

Join us at EASL’s 55th Annual Kid’s Fishing Rodeo for a fun Saturday morning of fishing on Saturday, August 1st, 2015 @ Twin Lakes Park (Hwy 74 in Dutchtown). This is a FREE event for children ages 2-to-14 years old. 

REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 6:30 AM

FISHING IS FROM 7:00–9:00 AM

CHILDREN COMPETE BY AGE GROUP AND GENDER, SO THERE ARE MANY WINNERS!

LOTS OF DOOR PRIZES, SO EVERY KID WINS SOMETHING!!!!!!

FREE HOTDOGS AND JAMBALAYA

Children must never be left unattended!!

PARENTS NEED TO KNOW:

  1. Bring a rod & reel or cane pole for your child to use.
  2. Crickets will be provided. You may bring other live bait, but no artificial lures.
  3. Bring a bucket to hold the fish caught.
  4. Parents can help to bait the hook, but the child must land the fish.
  5. Parents do not need to be members of EASL for the kids to fish.
  6. Bring folding chairs.
